Congratulations to all the Principal Investigators, scientists and Staff of AICRP on Sorghum while we Celebrate this year 50 years of Sorghum Research in India. Last year we were awarded Sardar Patel Outstanding Institute Award. Thanks to all for support and encouragement to take forward Sorghum and Millets Research and Development in India to ensure food and Nutrition Security across drylands. All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sorghum located at ICAR- Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad bagged prestigious “Choudhary Devi Lal Outstanding All India Coordinated Research Project Award 2019”, in recognition to its excellent performance. This award was declared by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) during its 92nd Foundation Day celebrations held on 16 July, 2020. Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare & President of the ICAR Society, Shri Purshottam Rupala, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare; Shri Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Dr. Suresh Kumar, Secretary- ICAR and Additional Secretary – DARE, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary -DARE & DG -ICAR and other dignitaries along with the staff of all ICAR institutes across India participated in this programme, which was organized online.
This prestigious award is given after a detailed study on various parameters and the AICRPs are chosen by an independent jury and a panel of professionals who believe in nurturing talent and in recognizing the best of the best. ICAR-IIMR coordinates and facilitates Millets research at Pan-India level through All India Coordinated Research projects of sorghum, pearl millet and small millets and provides linkages with state Agricultural Universities and various national and international agencies. Research carried out under AICRPs – led to release developed and released 4 kharif sorghum hybrids, 4 kharif sorghum varieties, 1 rabi sorghum hybrid and 6 forage sorghums including one Brown Mid –Rib sorghum, besides 18 finger Millet, 2 foxtail Millet, 3 Kodo millet; 2 Barnyard Millet; 10 Little millets and 2 proso millet varieties during last 5 years. Four old sorghum cultivars (CSH14, CSH16, CSH24MF, & CSV29R) were recognized as landmark varieties by ICAR in 2019. At IIMR, till date 36 value added products were developed and popularized. Technology demonstrations at farmers’ fields registered over 89.9% improvement in yield over local practices and commercialization of these technologies generated 90.0 lakh revenues. Extensive quality linkages and interactions among clienteles including scientists, farmers, universities, national and international institutions, state and centre department of agriculture and private partners involved in this programme has strengthened the system and improved efficacy. With these tireless efforts and visible results IIMR bagged the prestigious ICAR’s “Chaudhary Devi Lal Outstanding All India Coordinated Research Project Award 2019”.

The Institute
Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) an ISO 9001:2015 certified institute for its quality research management system, is a premier agricultural research institute engaged in basic and strategic research on Millets including Sorghum, Pearl millet and Small Millets under Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
IIMR has been instrumental in developing high yielding varieties and hybrids of Sorghum and other millets as well as production and product development technologies. IIMR has commercialized and operationalized desired seed and value added food product technologies to boost entrepreneurship, which could lead to commercialization of food technologies, innovations and popularization. Sustained efforts made in research in Millets have started showing results. Productivity and farmers’ income have been enhanced through improved varieties and technologies with significant effect on nutritional security. IIMR covers a wide spectrum of science and technology which includes crop improvement, crop production, crop protection, genomics, biotechnology, molecular biology, alternative uses, value addition, commercialization and to IPR technology. It provides significant technological intervention in many areas with regard to societal efforts which include extension activities in traditional farm lands and tribal areas. IIMR has achieved its leadership status in the field of millets research and development through quality publications, training, linkages, salable technologies, as evident by more than 80 MoUs with diverse partners including research and educational organization, private companies and start-ups.
The “Nutrihub” a Technology Business Incubator at IIMR, established under Nesting Incubation and Entrepreneurship for Leveraging Agri-innovations (NIELAN) project sponsored by the DST, was made operational and total 9 incubatees were graduated and 15 have been registered and ongoing. IIMR also rely on the multi-disciplinary networking with SAUs, other ICAR institutes, CSIR, DST, DBT, Indo-US council, seed Industry, and seed associations for advancement of research and technology commercialization of public-bred hybrids, and Training and capacity building initiatives. In recognition to its outstanding performance, ICAR- Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad bagged the prestigious “Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award 2018 “of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
