Pharmacists in Gujarat have geared up to give a tough fight to online medicine retailers by enabling people to get medicines at their doorsteps at competitive prices.
Close to 27,520 retail medical stores across the state will soon launch a dedicated mobile application to deliver medicines at the doorsteps of people. The pilot project will start from August 1.
Federation of Gujarat State Chemist and Druggists Association (FGCDA) will launch the app which will contain details of all medical stores across the state. Even as online medical retailers have just about 4% market share, the local pharmacies see them as a serious business threat.
The medical store owners will ask its regular customers to install the application with pre-filled details and they would be directed to the same pharmacy from where they have been buying the drugs once the prescription is uploaded.
Kirit Palan, secretary of the federation, said, “We have been fighting against online platforms for the last many years. We will now provide door-step service to the customers. The customers will also get the benefit of genuine medicines, as in the past several cases of duplicate drugs delivered by online platforms had also come into light. The customer will get medicines from the nearby store, so he will be assured about the genuineness of the product.”
‘Customers want better service’
Mayursinh Jadeja, vice-president of All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists, which represents the pharmacists of Saurahtra said, “After talking to several customers, we understood that people don’t go on online platforms only for discounts but expect a better service given their lifestyle. The new app is aimed at countering the online retailers.”
Hiren Thanki, a pharmacist in Rajkot said, “The good thing about this app is that the order uploaded by a customer will directly come to me. If I don’t have the stock of any particular medicine, the app will show them another nearby pharmacist who has the stock.”
