Panel discussion on strengthening of public private partnership in seed production and research organized by ICAR-Indian Institute of Seed Science

Brief Note

Panel discussion on strengthening of public private partnership in seed production and research was convened through online platform under the ambit of joint annual group meeting of AICRP-NSP (Crops) and ICAR Seed Project on 22.04.2021. Dr. K.V. Prabhu, Chairperson, PPV&FRA, New Delhi presided the session attended by more than 250 participants. Panelists from Public institutions viz., Dr. D. K. Yadava, ADG (Seed), ICAR, New Delhi; Dr. A. K. Singh, Director, IARI, New Delhi;Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi, Director, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad and Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Director, ICAR-IISS, Mau (convener) graced the occasion and emphasized the contribution of ICAR in making robust seed system. Insights pertinent to role of public sector in varietal development, augmentation of seed indices (VRR & SRR) and productivity maximization were deliberated to have adept partnership in seed domain for better product delivery to the famer. Whereas, from private seed sector, panelists viz. Mr. M. Prabhakar Rao, President, NSAI, New Delhi; Mr. Ram Kaundinya, Director General, FSII, New Delhi; Mr. Gubba Kiran, CEO, Gubba Cold Storage, Hyderabad presented views pertinent role of private seed sector and emphasized ontrust building, joint research projects development, core competency enablement with respect to seed storage and way forward of public private partnerships. Panelists reiterated on trust building and healthy partnering is the only way to tread ahead. Nodal officers of AICRP-NSP (Crops) & ICAR Seed Project, representatives from public seed sector (NSC, SSC, SSCA and Agril. department) and private seed sector (NSAI & FSII) participated and contributed in successful deliberations of referred meeting. The panel discussion ended on a positive note with having an action plan and measures to enable a structured partnership (PPP) in Indian seed domain.
